For my first weekly favorites I’ve got a couple things, some utterly frivolous (nothing wrong with that) and some not so frivolous. I share these as a resource for you all, and sort of hoping you’ll share your current favorites and finds with me. 😉 So share away in the comments, what is making your life easier right now, what’s firing up your imagination, what do you just love?
I just finished Octavia Butler’s Lilith’s Brood trilogy. In fact I read through all three books in less than a week, it was almost impossible to put down. This was my first book by Butler (fine, first three books). When I finished my last book I asked friends to recommend authors and books that were written by women and people of color. Why? Because white male voices tend to dominate Western culture and I think that’s problematic. Especially in my favorite genre, science fiction, white men are utterly dominant. I adored this series, when I came to the last page and realized it was over and that Butler was dead and would never write any more about this world she’d created I was gutted. It was that compelling. I found it incredibly timely as well, and despite the bleak start, hopeful. A+
I told you some of it wasn’t serious. Except that of course makeup sort of is for many of us. I’m not getting younger, and I’m finding that most of my foundations just look caky and unpleasant, even the expensive ones. They’re too thick, they settle into lines, I’m just over with and frustrated with many of them. So I was pretty happy to pull out a bottle I’d mostly dismissed, try it again and find it’s just what I want right now. No 7 Lift and Luminate Foundation is rocking it right now. Light coverage that just looks like natural skin (just a little smoothed and perfected) and doesn’t cake or break up on my face. Doesn’t look like I’m wearing a mask, but make me look healthy and less tired which is a good thing right now. I wish their shade range was wider as their lightest shade is a little too dark for me but it’s good enough I use it anyway! (And added bonus, there is none of that horrible yellow undertone that most American foundations have these days and that make me look like a self tanning job gone wrong, or like a certain politician…)
I work half-time at a real they-cut-me-a-paycheck job. And at that job my full time boss is on full time sabbatical. And I’m covering, still part time. Which is about as crazy and impossible as you could imagine. Thanks to an great friend I was clued into Plated’s meal prep/planning service. We had our first week this last week and we’re so incredibly hooked. Cost is about $10 per meal, ingredients are delivered to our door (no grocery shopping, yay! Am I the only one who LOATHES grocery shopping?), the recipes have been super simple, and good. We loved two of them and liked the third. That’s pretty good for dedicated foodies who are sort of snobs about cooking. And the amount of time and stress it saves is also saving me right now.
That’s it for me this week, what are you loving, what’s saving your sanity, what fun thing did you just stumble upon? Let’s hear it people!
