In case you hadn’t noticed, the world is a pretty broken place. I don’t care what you think about politics, who you vote for, whether you are religious or not, one thing I think we can all agree on (well that and pie) is that the world is messed up. We’ve got people shooting one another over skin color, or religion, or for no reason at all. We’ve got a political divide so deep and divisive that we can’t even have a civil conversation about it anymore (don’t believe me, try it.) Right now there are legal residents of my country being deported to dangerous parts of the world in direct violation of the constitution of my country.
We treat folks who have an illness of the brain as somehow different from those who have an illness of another organ like the liver, because reasons I guess?
Frankly no matter who you are it’s easy to get overwhelmed, it’s easy to be utterly terrified most of the time. In my own religious tradition the most often spoken phrase used by divine messengers is some version of “don’t be afraid.” Which half the times makes me want to say: oh yeah, you try walking a mile in our shoes buddy and see how you feel. But that’s not helpful, so I mutter it under my breath because I’m just a tiny bit passive aggressive.
Here’s the thing, if we all sit around paralyzed by how broken shit is nothing will ever get better and we’ll all be miserable. That might be great for the chocolate cake industry, and the folks who make our anti-anxiety meds, but it’s not great for us. Also, if we spend all our time fighting one another about which of us is right nothing will ever get better either.
I’m one little person who likes pie, and puppies, and becomes utterly incapable of anything but baby talk in the presence of a cat but I’m not willing to do nothing. So here’s what I’m doing, I’m making my corner of the world as much better as I can, in any way I can. I’d like to invite you to do the same.
Bake a pie. (really this is never a wrong response to anything, because it’s pie and pie fixes everything, y’all.)
Throw a dinner party. (No not a fancy shindig, seriously invite over the folks you don’t have to clean the house for and just eat together.)
Hug your kids/pets/weird uncle. They’ll all hate it, but it’ll make you feel better.
Donate. Put your money where your mouth is.
Be honest. When you aren’t OK, be OK with not being OK. You’ll be amazed how much that’ll free the folks around you who have been pretending to be OK all this time.
Look for the light. Seriously, when shit gets bad do what Mr. Roger’s said and look for the helpers, look for the people in the midst of the chaos who are helping and throw your lot in with them.
Be the light. For someone, in even the smallest way be the person Mr. Roger’s is telling others to look for.
Never give up. Yeah, that kitten hanging from a rope in the poster I had in the 80s wasn’t entirely wrong, though he was pissed you didn’t help him get off the dang rope so you know, maybe do that.
We’re all in this together.
What’s your way of mending our little corner of the broken ass world?
