(Monthly favorites are a light hearted monthly column here. Sometimes they might contain really deep discoveries and truths, other times they’ll be silly and fun. Because life tends to be like that. Enjoy and share your own discoveries this month, whatever they may be.)
Someone said to me recently that February was way too short this year. How weird is it that a month can be two days shorter than another and feel about two weeks shorter? I certainly don’t know, but it’s been and gone like that and I’m reeling a bit.
So Mr. CWL discovered the wonders of muddling this winter and has been making me tart, delicious lemon drops with real muddled lemon. We’ve even now got a real muddler to go with our martini shaker, we might actually be adults now. It can all get rather complicated as that article sort of indicates but really you just need something to bash the crap out of your fruit and bingo you are in business. The possibilities this summer with watermelon and local berries? Infinite. If the dog will please stop eating all the raspberries off our little raspberry bush I might even invent a raspberry cocktail.
Trader Joe’s Crunchy Cinnamon Squares. Who here wasn’t allowed to eat sugary cereal as a kid? Just me? Yes my Mom was one of those health nuts who only allowed us Cheerios. The original ones that taste to this day like fine quality cardboard. I went through a phase when I first lived on my own where I bought tons of the sugary stuff just because I could, yes I was a rebel. But I’ve mostly gotten over that and chose rather sensible things with just a touch of sweetener in them (what can I say, I never want to eat cardboard again). My weakness? Cinnamon Toast Crunch, I will eat that shit any chance I get. So when I rounded the corner in Trader Joe’s and there is this wink-wink-nudge-nudge not Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal, I bought it. My husband rolled his eyes, but I bought that box and I finished it in two days. It’s got whole wheat so it’s totally not bad for you, sort of? Try it, but if you’ve got kids hide it from them, because they’re supposed to be healthy and stuff.
I’m still loving my No. 7 foundation and I’ve basically stopped using any eye makeup except Starlooks liquid eye shadow. I got a little tester in a makeup subscription box and liked it. But since February became the month of “do all the things” it’s become my favorite. Swipe the applicator across your lid, a little finger pat action to get it even, done. I do not have time for blending, and multiple colors right now. I just want something to make me look more awake (there isn’t another coffee in the world) and this does it. And it’s simple, and the color is really pretty (I’ve got Rose Gold). The tiny tester has lasted me forever so I went ahead and ordered a full size of the Rose Gold. Simple is good.
I feel like this post should just be titled “apparently I’m 12.” Because my favorite thing right now? Leftover can of whipped cream in the fridge means whipped cream in my coffee. Best. Creamer. Ever. You know it’s true.
Also, if it’s cold and crappy where you are, like it is here? The Bath & Bodyworks Marshmallow Fireside candle is amazingly cozy and realistic. I am currently craving s’mores though.
The weather today has been so weird I’m beginning to think Mother Nature is punking us. We started out with 3” of snow in roughly 2 hours in a place that gets snow once every ten years. Then it turned to rain, then hail, and now it’s snowing again and, wait for it… thundering. That’s right, thunder-snow. So like any sensible person I’m inside where the weather is sane and where when the rain of frogs starts (because that seems logical at this point) I won’t get hit by them.
If you are also stuck inside here are some things to keep you busy. A great introductory tutorial to watercolor technique, I’ve always wanted to learn to use these so I’m tempted to break out the ancient dried up art supplies. Or if that’s not your speed these are really cool hand lettering ideas.
To be honest though, I am rubbish at arts and crafts so realistically, instead I’m doing this: Dutch Chocolate Walnut Frosted Brownies.
That’s my Feb, what are you loving this month?
