Nature Bathing: Soak in Beauty

nature bathing beauty

Nature, beauty, holiness. If you’ve ever spent a long, cold winter night in the wilderness huddled into your sleeping bag for warmth you probably understand why ancient people’s worshiped the sun. Those first, glorious warm rays of light breaking the horizon are like salvation washing over your shivering body, it doesn’t matter that the winter …

Photo Friday: Wisdom

wisdom

Wisdom. Meet Zulu, a twenty year old Boer horse (native to South Africa). Zulu has learned wisdom. He has literally tangled with a rhino, and he learned from his experience I can tell you. We don’t often value wisdom enough. We see scars, and grey hairs, and a steady step and we think boring, or ugly, or old.

But wisdom is earned in the struggle, it does not come without scars and grey hairs and a few aches and pains as reminders of past adventures. Youth and exuberance can accomplish much but wisdom can do much, much more if we’re willing to listen. Wisdom can heal, guide, and enlighten. Who are the wise sages in your life, what gifts do they have for you?

Photo Friday: Dry

photo meditation dry

Are you spiritually dry? How is the spiritual well feeling? Lush and healthy and flowing, or a bit like old bone bleaching in the sun? It can be easy when things are dry, stuck, or slow to feel despair. To feel like a failure for not feeling something. But we need the dry times, we grow most in those dry periods of our lives when things are hard and abrasive. The sun beats down on us, and we sort of dry up and blow away, or at least all the fluff does. And what’s left? Beautiful, perfect puzzle pieces like the bones of the skull fuzed so perfectly together. We are a patchwork, a quilt of the finest design and sometimes we have to see the seams, get way too close to the threads and see where they ravel and catch one another and how the whole thing holds together.

Take a deep breath, the rains will come and the new grass will grow and that beautiful, glorious bone that weathers even the driest patches will carry sinew and muscle and skin again. This is the miracle of our lives, rise and fall, retreat and advance, live and live again.

Photo Friday: Warts and All

do what scares you

Who’s having a warthog sort of week? There’s something about the African warthog. They’re ugly that’s for sure. But the babies have a weird, ugly sort of cuteness about that that is hard to deny. The older ones though are rough, motley looking critters with big tusks, wiry hair in all the wrong places (and not enough of it) and beady, suspicious little eyes.

Until they move. And then. Well I love them. Their tails go straight up in the air like a old fashioned car radio antenna with the end flopping around every which way. They run all in a line, tails waving like signals and there’s nothing to do watching them take off into the bush but smile. It’s true of many things that are ugly when we’re in the midst of them but have something more perhaps to share in hindsight as they leave us behind, tails waving and pointing the way to? Well who knows what awaits us around the bend.
